After lunch we decided to climb the Belfort and check out the view. This picture shows the wonderful Burg square. 366 steps up is pretty long. About two-thirds of the way to the top is the carillion level where a woman still plays the bells for a weekly concert. Here were saw the cool interworkings of the clock and the drum to automatically play the bells. Then it was up the last 150 stairs to the top. The bottom stairs were largely stone, but the upper ones were wood.

At the top we enjoyed the views and got to hear the carillions playing. It was really amazing seeing all the wires and hammers hitting the 75-100 bells. One song played was Ode to Joy. Eliot didn't much enjoy the "music" (it was very loud), but Miles was pretty intrigued with the whole operation. As soon as the music stopped, Eliot was heading down with or without us!

After wandering the city, we went to a local butcher for dinner fixings and cooked a nice meal in our little kitchen. The boys enjoyed flipping light switches, checking out the cabinets, and climbing up the ladder into the loft above the bedroom. After 30-45 minutes of a flurry of activity, Eliot exclaimed that "there's not much else to do here." Off to bed before day 2 in Brugge.
