CULTURE SHOCK - We haven't made too many cultural mistakes so far, though we have had a few.

For Eliot's birthday, we wanted to order pizza and decided to pick a place randomly out of the phone book. It was an Italian place, so we felt pretty safe with it. We ordered pepperoni and black olives - Eliot's favorite. When the pizza arrived, we had two pizzas with green peppers, onions, and capers. Not exactly what we wanted. Apparently, we needed to order Salami; they didn't even have olives!

When we finished our tour of Rotterdam, Eliot really wanted to take the tram back to Centraal Station. Blaak Station had tram, metro and train lines. Jim went to the information booth to get tickets. We had been waiting about 15 minutes and no tram. Others were waiting too, so we just thought it was a holiday schedule. Others trams had been running on the mains streets. After 20 minutes, Eliot asked me when would the tram come (for the 10th time) and I replied that it would come when it comes (for the 10th time). The man next to us said the tram isn't coming today you have to take the Metro. So, down we went to the Metro. We watched others get through the gates with their Strippekaart (tickets), so we put ours in (3; 1 at a time) and went through. We went into a second set of gates and down. When we got there, we were on the north side instead of the south side, so we ran up the stairs with 2 kids and a stroller and got on the correct side through another set of gates. I am sure the policeman were wondering what these crazy tourists were doing. We never got any stamp or anything, so we have no idea if we even did it right. Oh well. We tried and we did get back to CS! The funny thing is that we had to switch metro lines after one station. We could have taken a train cheaper and more directly to CS or even possibly Delft. The trials of figuring out how to get around!

Yesterday, I needed to buy stamps for some postcards. I remembered seeing a postbank at the train station, so I loaded the stroller and went to buy my stamps. When I put in my debit card, it asked me my pin and then how many euros I wanted to take out of the ATM. OOPS! Postbank is a bank here in Holland (maybe even Europe). So, I walked on to the post office to get my stamps!
