Grote Kerk van St Bavo - Construction of the church was from 1370 to 1538 - now that's a long time horizon. The 50-m steeple was built in 1518-1520. As most old churches, it was built over many years, so there were lots of phases and ages of the different sections. I was intrigued by the variety of roof lines and spires. Inside the church there were ship models from the 16th and 17th centuries. The entire floor ws made up of charcoal gray gravestones dating from as far back as the 15th century. The star attraction inside the church is the Christian Muller organ built between 1735 and 1738. The organ has 5068 pipes and is 30 m (90 ft) high. It is quite magnificent! Mozart played this organ in 1766 when he was 10 years old. Miles was quite taken by it and kept going back to look up at it. The organ had lions and a shield up top plus lots of cherubs; this picture shows the exquisite wooden ceiling. The bottom had cherubs and the entire organ was gold and red and pipes. The carvings were so intricate and ostentatious.
