This morning Miles and I met Gina and Merrick at the Hema for a little shopping. Gina was so surprised to learned that I had not bought anything there since our arrival. Apparently, it's a Dutch institution. Hema is a housewares store, kind of like a Target without the consummables (paper, cleaning products, and food). Our plan was for an early lunch at Stads-Koffyhuis.

We walked along the Molslaan and saw a city worker with a low-rise barge; he was coming through a very low bridge.
His barge was filled with bikes previously lost to the muck of the canals. He was stopping for a coffee break. Gina and I walked onward to the market to get veggies and nuts. The boys enjoyed getting out and playing in the big wooden shoe. The sky was so blue today - a wonderful fall day. I took this famous shot of
Hugo Grotius (international lawyer, historian, philosopher, and diplomat, 1583-1645)
in front of the Nieuwe Kerk. Even though Jim was home sick, he was able to pick Eliot up for me from school, so that Gina and I could enjoy a nice lunch. After lunch, I made a run to the grocery store.
