We decided to take a canal boat cruise of Leiden. We got to the dock as a tour boat was being loaded; it was full, so we bought a ticket for the 4:00 tour and headed over to a cafe on the canal for a drink. Julie and Jim had a scrumdeli-itious apple tart, and the boys and I had tostis (toasted sandwiches).

The canal tour was about an hour taking us on a lovely tour of the city via water. Jim got his second nap of the day, while Miles inched down my leg burrowing in to fall asleep (he has had some strange fettishes since weaning!). Along our route we saw:
A yellow and blue lifting bridge
A water mill along the water's edge
Leiden's botanical gardens (Hortus Botanicus)
Floral display in honor of Rembrandth's 400th birthday (Leiden is his birthdplace)
A few very low clearance bridges (2-3 inches)
Some beautiful and some run-down house boats
The stadhuis and city center and the Koornbrug
The skinniest building in Leiden
A 1640 gate from the old slaughterhouse
An old flour mill with a huge sun dial on the warehouses building
Large house along the canal that sold for a mere 1.75 M Euros
Traditional British telephone booth on top of a student house
A flat barge floating an excavator down the canal
