With the reformation, it seems that all the Catholic churches were renamed, often to the very creative Oude Kerk and Nieuwe Kerk. This is Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam which has served as the national church of the Netherlands since the 19th century. It was built at the same time as the town hall (now the palace). The stained glass is beautiful - this particular one has a modern design. Hanging from the gorgeous ceiling was the longest chandelier I have ever seen - maybe 100 ft or more? I loved the wood work, especially this beautifully carved wooden pulpit. The massive brass choir screen was something to see, as was the 17th century organ painted with scenes from the life of David! The church is no longer used for services. It was showing a nice art exhibit from Kiev.
