I had sent an inquiry to a hotel in Maastricht for the 4th of July hoping we might do a trip for the holiday. Maastricht is supposedly a fantastic, medieval city. My real agenda was to go see the Tour de France, which was coming to Holland on the 4th. Using babelfish to translate the reply from the hotel, they said we had a reservation for the 4th (oops - I was only trying to check availability). Jim was keen on the trip, so we added a night and decided to make a little vacation of it.

Jim had a business meeting today in Veenendaal - east of Utrecht City. Since Jim was going to drive there, it made sense to just join him. While he met with the client in the afternoon, I did a driving tour with 2 sleeping boys. This was my first time driving the new Volvo; in fact, I hadn't driven a car in 6 weeks. I was hoping to go see some castles in the areas, but for the record, most museums and certainly castles are closed on Mondays. Once I made it out of the business park area, we drove through a cute little town called Elst and then up to Amerongen (where one castle is located). This was my first driving test as the roads were narrow and it really is unclear which streets are one ways. All streets within these little towns have such narrow roads plus they all are paved with bricks, so you think it's a sidewalk and not a road. Once out of Amerongen, the road transitioned to the top of a berm. It was a great, since you could see so far. Eliot woke up just in time to see these interesting structures. Once I was beyond the Star Wars creatures, I could tell that they were locks (sluis) along a river. We saw many farms along this road, with crops and dairy cows. The countryside on the Nederrijn river is dotted with old wooden tobacco-drying sheds (LP). Many farms had large mounds covered with black fabric or plastic and old tires; I think the tarps covered grain. As we drove into Wijk bij Duurstede, we saw several fjord horses (paarden). These horses have beautiful short-hair blonde manes with a black stripe in the middle. This town had a castle and windmilll, so we made this our destination.
