Wijk bij Duurstede - District by Duurstede (the castle) is a quant little town along a river. There's a ferry crossing at this town.
The Walpoortmolen Rijn en Lek, built in 1659, is the only wallmill gate in the Netherlands. It was built in 1659 as a tanning-bark mill; now it's a corn mill that was restored in 1962. Eliot really liked the idea that you can drive through it! We walked to town and passed this
lion statue with a church in the background. After visiting the vvv (tourist bureau) located in the old Stadhuis (townhall), we walked around about an hour. The St. John the Baptist church was used as a parish church in 1365.
The tower construction was started in 1486 including animals, a clock and dramatic jagged lines. After visiting the castle
[next post], we enjoyed an ice cream treat at this
river terrace cafe up on the dyke before heading out to pick up Jim and continue our journey south.
