Kasteel Duurstede is the first castle we have seen on our trip. This one has been uninhabited since 1577. The inside was closed (a Monday), but we could walk around the outside in a nice park. As Eliot noted, "it even has a moat around the castle." I really liked the wooden drawbridge to keep out enemies (and tourists). In the background is the four-cornered tower, the donjon, with its 2m thick walls. This is the oldest building in Wijk bij Duurstede, built in 1270. Under David of Burgundy, Duurstede expanded to become a great and powerful castle (from city guide). The Burgundy Tower was built in the 15th century (after 1459 when Bishop David moved in).
