Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam

We decided to go to the Van Gogh (Dutch pronunciation vahn khawkh) Museum first, since they had an audio tour for kids and we thought Eliot would enjoy that one the most. Miles fell asleep, and mom and I took turns carrying him, while Eliot sat in the stroller. Eliot enjoyed the kids audio tour (in English), which highlighted different paintings than our guide. We also brought along Merrick's Mijn Eerste Kunstboek (My First Artbook), which had pictures (shoes, lemon, sailboats, etc.) from his paintings that we had to find in the museum.

The museum had an outstanding collection of Van Gogh's works across his short career. He painted an amazing number of paintings in just 10 very tragic years. Seeing his works up close was an experience. I nearly cried - they were that beautiful. Maybe too, it was knowing his tragic, sad, depressed life.

The paintings that moved us the most were:
Still Life with Quinces and Lemons 1887 - the only painting with his hand-painted frame
The Courtesan (after Eisen) 1887, which shows his interest in Japanese art and culture
Wheatfield with Crows 1890 (weeks before he killed himself)
Olive Grove 1889
Almond Blossom 1890
Irises 1890
