Looking
down the Spiegelrei, the 15th-century Poortersloge (Burgher's Lodge) tower is clearly visible. This building is where the city's wealthiest merchants once met. The Poortersloge and Oud Tolhuis (where the tolls were levied on goods being brought into the city) are at the Jan Van Eyckplein,
dominated by a statue of the great Flemish Primitive artist.
Eliot and I take a break on a bench and comment that there were no seagulls on the
Jan Van Eyck statue. We walked down the street to see the less celebrated
Hans Memling, who just got a statue in a residential area.

After finishing our walk, we returned to our apartment for a rest. A thunderstorm blew through soon after getting inside, with lightning and pouring rain. We went to a nice French restaurant for an early dinner. Bistro De Schaar - wonderful! The boys did fairly well, and we even got to enjoy a dessert - Dame Blanche and Chocolat Mousse.
